Women’s basketball defeated by No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team hosted the No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Sunday, falling by a score of 98-59.

The game started with a close battle as both teams went back-and-forth for the first four minutes of play. Leading by a point at 12-11, the Titans pulled away from the Vikings with a 15-0 run over the course of just over two minutes. Illinois Wesleyan hit 65 percent of its looks and 4-5 from behind the three-point line on their way to a 34-15 lead after 10 minutes. The second quarter was the highest scoring frame from both teams, but the Titans continued to stretch their margin with a 27-18 advantage. Corey Whitlock led the Vikings with seven points, while Carly Stone and Cali Papez closely followed with six. Illinois Wesleyan led 61-33 at the break.

Returning to the court, the Vikings tallied the first six points of the third quarter and hit 7-11 shots in the period for a percentage of 64, but the visitors stayed hot from three-point range, hitting five in the quarter to help stretch their lead more. The final quarter was low scoring for both teams with a 13-12 margin, with the Vikings holding the Titans under 30 percent shooting through the last 10 minutes. 

The top scorer for Augie was Papez, earning a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Whitlock was close behind with 11 points, three rebounds, four assists, and a block. 

With the loss, Augie drops to 3-2 in conference play and 8-6 overall. The Vikings will be back in action on Wednesday, January 10 as they host the North Central Cardinals.
