ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team will return to the Carver Center to host the No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Sunday, January 7.
The Vikings are back at home after a string of three straight games away from home, which included a 69-67 road victory over the Elmhurst Bluejays in their most recent outing on Wednesday.
In the conference victory, the Bluejays pulled out in front in the first to take a 16-12 advantage. In the second quarter both teams found success behind the arc, but Augie took the advantage in that category, knocking down six of nine looks, while Elmhurst hit four of its nine. After trailing by as many as 10, the Vikings tied the game on a three-point shot to even the score at 30 apiece, but the Bluejays offense followed with two made shots and a free throw to close out the half with a 35-30 score.
After the halftime break, Augie tied the game up two more times and held on to the lead until two-and-a-half minutes left in the quarter, but a 10-2 run from Elmhurst concluded the frame with a 53-51 advantage heading into the final quarter of the game. Three more ties kicked off the first three minutes of the final period before the Vikings took the lead around the five-minute mark. Augie never lost the lead the rest of the way, holding the Bluejays to just one made field goal in the final three minutes sealing the 69-67 win.
Illinois Wesleyan enters Sunday nationally ranked at No. 13 as they sit at 11-2 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. The Titans currently are in the midst of an eight-game winnings streak, defeating the Hendrix Warriors in their most recent contest on December 29 by a score of 94-45. As a team, the Titans shot 49.3 percent and had 10 makes from beyond the arc, while holding Hendrix to 37.2 percent for the game. Illinois Wesleyan boasts four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Lauren Huber's 18 points per outing. The Titans are 6-1 on the road this season, with their lone defeat coming at nationally-ranked Hope back in November by a score of 80-73
Illinois Wesleyan holds a 51-35 all-time series record over Augie. The last matchup was on January 28 of last year, where the Vikings achieved a 75-72 triumph at home. Macy Beinborn, Cali Papez, and Emma Berg all notched double-digit scoring in the win.
The conference battle is set to begin at 2 p.m.
