WHEATON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team traveled to the two-day Pete Willson Invitational over the weekend, highlighted by a first place and second place finish.
The first day concluded with the Vikings sitting in 15th place with 40 points and three individuals heading to the quarterfinals, starting with Trevor Boryla, who grabbed three wins in the 133 weight division by fall, 4-3 decision, and 13-1 major decision. Jacob Badger secured a fall, a 10-0 major decision, and a 9-0 major decision in the 197 class, while Josh Woodrey received a bye, a fall, and a 5-0 decision.Â
On Saturday, the Vikings moved up four places to finish 11th out of 32 teams with 57.5 team points, which put them 5.5 points behind North Central in 10th. Boryla found victory with a 13-1 major decision in the quarterfinals and a 9-3 decision in the semifinals and closed out the final round with a 8-6 decision. With Boryla's success he earned the George Olson Outstanding Wrestler Award and with the wins this weekend, Boryla notched his 100th career victory at Augustana. Badger secured second place as he obtained a 9-0 major decision and a 4-3 decision in the semifinals to move onto the championship. Woodrey closed out the weekend with a third-place finish following a win in the quarterfinals with a 5-0 decision, but a loss in the semifinals moved him to the consolation bracket, which he conquered with a 1-0 decision and went into overtime to grab a 8-1 decision.Â
Other outcomes for Augie was from Braiden Young, who made it to the third round of the 184 consolation rounds with a 8-1 decision and 12-10 decision. Jack Patting in the 165 category found victory in round one with an 11-5 decision, and A.J. Joyner found success in the first round of the 174 consolation battles with a 14-8 decision.
The Vikings will be back in action on Friday, February 9 for the Central Last Chance Invitational in Pella, Iowa.
