BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team stays on the road as they travel south to battle the No. 11 Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Saturday, January 27.
The Vikings sit at 11-8 on the season and 6-4 in conference play as they enter the weekend after losing a mid-week conference showdown against the Wheaton Thunder by a score of 67-49 on Wednesday. After trading baskets early, Augie secured the upper hand with a seven-point run to make the score 12-5. In the final five minutes of the first, Wheaton closed the gap and snatched the lead at 1:19 to end the quarter up 15-14.
Corey Whitlock started the second off with two layups to turn the steer back to Augie. Both teams tied twice more in the quarter, but the Vikings fell short in the quarter by one point with an 18-17 margin with both teams shooting a field goal percentage of 46.7. The Thunder led 33-32 at the break.
Returning from the halftime break, Wheaton pulled away with a 19-10 quarter. A three-pointer from Carly Stone gave Augie a 36-25 lead, but Wheaton followed with a 6-0 run before holding an advantage of 52-41 heading into the fourth. In the final quarter of the contest, the Vikings had their lowest scoring total of the game with eight points, while Wheaton secured 15 to generate a final score of 67-49.
Kadence Tatum and Whitlock led the Vikings with 10 points, while Whitlock also had eight rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Cali Papez grabbed nine boards off the glass and Stone had five assists.
The Titans enter the weekend contest with a 15-4 overall record, 8-2 in conference play, and return to action after falling to No. 17 Millikin 94-77 on Wednesday. As a team, Illinois Wesleyan shot 36.6 percent, while Millikin obtained 52 percent for the game. The Titans boast four players averaging double figures in points, led by Ava Bardic with 18. Illinois Wesleyan holds a 3-2 home record, with their last home game resulting in a 93-91 loss to Millikin on Januray 24.
Illinois Wesleyan holds a 52-35 all-time record over Augie, with their last matchup on January 7 concluding in a 98-59 score in the Titans' favor. Papez led the team with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Whitlock was close behind with 11 points, three rebounds, four assists, and a block.
