WHEATON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team went 4-0 at the CCIW Duals on Sunday, picking up wins over Wheaton, Lakeland, Concordia (Wis.), and Aurora to make it nine straight victories overall.
The Vikings started the day off with a 29-18 victory over the Wheaton Thunder, winning six of the 10 matches. The Thunder started by grabbing the 125 weight division, while Trevor Boryla converted a fall over his opponent to make the score 6-4 with Augie securing the upper hand. Wheaton took the 141 class and Samuel Deyro followed with a 13-9 decision in the 149 category to give the Vikings the lead again at 9-8. The Vikings secured the next two weight categories, starting with Kameron Hanel in 157, who generated a fall to grab six team points. Jack Patting notched an 18-1 technical fall in the 165 weight class to grab five points and create a 20-8 score. The Thunder ended the Vikings' streak at 174 division but Clay DeBaillie converted a 14-0 major decision to add four points to Augie's score. Wheaton won the 197 class, but Josh Woodrey closed out the first dual with a 19-0 technical fall at 285 to conclude the dual with a score of 29-18.
Augie's next battle was against the Lakeland Muskies, which ended in a final score of 44-10. The showdown started with two forfeits in the Vikings' favor before the Muskies grabbed the 141 and 149 category to bring the score to 12-10 in favor of Augustana. The Vikings turned it back around with six straight wins beginning with Jack Miller, who grabbed six points due to fall in 157. The next three faceoffs converted in a fall, starting with Hanel in the 165 class, Patting in 174, and Braiden Young in 184 to increase the gap to 36-10. In the 197 weight division, DeBaillie won by forfeit and Woodrey closed out the match with a 9-2 decision to finalize the dual with a score of 44-10.
In the third contest, the Vikings battled the Concordia-Wisconsin Falcons and achieved a 40-15 victory. The Falcons grabbed the first matchup in the 125 category with Jacobs following with a win due to a forfeit to take a 6-3 lead. Augie grabbed the 141 division with a 12-0 major decision from Boryla and Colin Roque generated a fall in the 149 division to increase the gap to 16-3. The following six matches all resulted in a fall, starting with Concordia in the 157 division. Miller snatched the 165 weight class with Patting right behind in the 174 category. The Falcons secured 184, while the Vikings grabbed the last two attempts of the night with DeBaillie and Woodrey to wrap up the dual with a final score of 40-15.
The final battle was against the Aurora Spartans, where Augie came out on top with a score of 25-22. The Spartans found early success as they grabbed the 125 category, but Boryla followed with a 17-2 technical fall to get the Vikings five points and pull within one. Aurora grabbed the next two attempts, but Augie followed with two wins of their own with a pin from Hanel and Patting converting a 10-2 major decision. The Spartans grabbed the 174 weight class, but DeBaillie snatched a 13-5 major decision to add four team points before Anthony Joyner found success in the 197 category with an 11-8 decision to tie the score at 22-22. In the final match of the day, Woodrey sealed the win for Augie with a 2-1 decision to secure the 25-22 for the Vikings.
With the four wins, Augie moves to 14-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The Vikings will travel back to Wheaton on Friday, January 26 for the Pete Willson Invitational.
