ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team dropped a home battle against the Carroll Pioneers on Sunday, falling by a score of 97-59.
Carroll got on the board first with the game's first five points, but Augie followed with three made shots to take the lead after two-and-a-half minutes of play. Both teams went back-and-forth Carroll used an 8-2 run to close the frame and take a 23-15 lead after 10 minutes of play. Augustana hit 7-8 shots, but Carroll connected on 50 percent of its 18 looks. The Pioneers out-scored the Vikings 22-13 in the second to extend the halftime cushion to 45-31.
Returning to the court, Augie's offense struggled to get the ball moving, falling behind 24-12 as the Pioneers continued to separate themselves. The visitors closed out the final quarter with a 28-16 advantage to bring it to its final score. Augustana hit 63.6 percent of its shots in the fourth.
Cali Papez led the Vikings for the fourth consecutive time with 12 points and six rebounds, with Macy Beinborn close behind with 11 points, five assists, and a steal.
With the loss, the Vikings sit at 9-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play and will continue their home streak with a conference battle against Wheaton on Wednesday, January 17.
