MILAN, Ill. -- Sam Evenson and his tournament-leading 146 card helped lead the Augustana men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Duane Chaney Invitational at Pinnacle CC hosted by Black Hawk on September 7-8.
After day one, Evenson sat in a three-way tie for third place, tallying a 75 on Thursday behind a trio of birdies and double-digit pars. The junior transfer from Iowa Central elevated on Friday, notching a season-best 71 round to put his tournament total at 146 and secure a first-place tie with Tyler Picken of Carl Sandburg.
Evenson and Picken entered a playoff, tying on the opening hole with both players notching a birdie. On the second hole, the Augie golfer carded a par to beat the Charger and claim sole possession of first place. Evenson became Augustana's first individual champion since October 5, 2017, when Alex Sierra led the Iowa Wesleyan Fall Invitational pack. He also led the Vikings in birdie conversions with nine, including six on Friday.
Kevin Cortez and Vilhelm Johansson each turned in tournament totals of 156 to finish in a six-way tie for 10th place overall. Cortez tallied rounds of 77 and 79 and amassed a team-high 25 pars across the two days, while Johansson flipped Cortez's output with Thursday and Friday scores of 79 and 77.
Alexandre Thery had both his rounds added to the Vikings' total, as he amassed a 160 score, carding rounds of 77 and 83 for a 24th-place individual finish. Patrick McGrath and Adam Soczka added to Augustana's total with respective single-day scores of 76 and 80.
The Vikings totaled a 618 with round scores of 305 and 313, placing them second overall. The team trailed only tournament-host Black Hawk, who totaled a 605 across the two day competition.
The team will take a two-week break before returning to action on September 22-23 at Brighton Dale Golf Club in Kansasville, Wis. for the Midwest Region Classic hosted by Benedictine.
