Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo wrapped up their stay at the Gary Troyer Tournament in Southern California on Saturday, falling to a pair of top four nationally ranked teams.
Augustana fell to No. 4 Chapman in the first contest of the day by a score of 18-13. The Vikings and Panthers found themselves tied at three goals apiece after eight minutes of action, with Augie seeing a score of
Oskar Bannister and two from
Joseph Addison. Augie mirrored their first-quarter effort with three more scores in the second, but a seven-spot from Chapman gave the Panthers a 10-6 lead at halftime. Addison notched his third goal of the game with just 10 seconds left in the half to pull the Vikings within four.
The third quarter brought a defensive battle, with Chapman posting a 3-1 advantage to extend their lead to six heading into the final frame. Augustana saw their best offensive quarter of the contest, stringing together six goals, but could not dip under a deficit of four as five tallies from the Panthers wrapped up the 18-13 final score.
Addison led the Vikings with six goals.
The day's finale put the Vikings up against the No. 1 team in the nation. The Redland Bulldogs took control of the game early, posting a 4-0 advantage after eight minutes of action. Augie got on the board early in the second on a score from
Jake Fisher, but the Bulldogs added onto their margin before the break, sending in four more for an 8-1 advantage at halftime.
The two teams traded a trio of goals in the third quarter, with Augustana seeing two from Bannister. The Vikings and Bulldogs remained even after scoring twice each in the final frame to conclude at its 13-6 score.Â
Augustana drops to 3-5 with the losses. The team will be back in action tomorrow at Whittier.Â
