Women's volleyball earns pair of sweeps over Grinnell, Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team picked up a pair of 3-0 wins on Friday, defeating the Grinnell Pioneers and Loras Duhawks in a non-conference tri-match.

Match One (W 3-0 vs. Grinnell)

Augie quickly doubled up the Pioneers in the opening set with an 8-4 advantage to begin their first match of the day. The Vikings held onto a small margin before a quick 5-1 run extended their advantage out to six with 10 points left to go. Grinnell used a run of their own to climb back within one and eventually even the score at 19 points apiece, but the final six points went Augie's way to give them a 1-0 lead in the match.

It was a game of runs to begin set two, with Grinnell taking the first four points of the frame before the Vikings tallied eight of the next nine. The two teams battled back and forth, trading rally wins into an 11-11 deadlock. From there, Augie used its second big run of the frame, rattling off a 9-1 scoring outburst to take control of the game. Evey Gervase and Syd Krueger each tallied service aces during the run, while Emily Schipper notched her seventh kill of the set to put the Vikings up eight. The team fended off a late rally from the Pioneers with back-to-back points to win 25-19 for the second straight time.

Set three was all Augustana, quickly doubling up Grinnell with a 12-6 lead. The Vikings' cushion grew to as many as 11 points, but the Pioneers answered with five points in a row to remain within striking distance. Grinnell only captured one point the rest of the way as Augie capped off the sweep with a 25-14 victory.

Schipper led all players with a match-high 21 kills on 45 attempts, while Grace Vranicar led a defensive effort that saw four Vikings in double figures in digs with 20 herself.

Match Two (W 3-0 Loras)

In the opener of their second match of the day, the Vikings and Duhawks fought back-and-forth in a tightly-contested first set. Neither team held a lead of more than two points until the Vikings created separation with a 14-11 advantage. Augie never trailed the rest of the way, pulling away once more after Loras cut the margin to one at 16-15. Four different players secured kills to account for the team's final six points.

Augustana was the first to 10 points in set two with a 10-4 lead to kick things off. The Vikings did not slow down, pushing their margin to double digits after seven consecutive scores moved a four-point lead to 11. The double-digit lead remained intact at the end as the Vikings went up 2-0 after a 25-15 win. Augustana pulled away early in set three and nearly mirrored their second set final score, taking down the Duhawks 25-16 in the finale to complete the sweep.

Schipper and Vranicar again were the team leaders for the Vikings, posting 14 kills and 20 digs, respectively.

Augustana moves to 12-4 overall with the wins. The team will return home on Wednesday, October 4 to face Carthage.
