WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team was defeated on the road Friday night, falling to the No. 7 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks in consecutive sets.
The home team got out to a fast start, notching six of the first seven points scored in the opening set. Augie bounced back to tie the game at 6-6 and hung around before Whitewater extended their advantage back out to five at 15-10. The Vikings got within two points on two different occasions, but the Warhawks used a late scoring run to pull away and win the opener by a score of 25-18. Another fast start ensued for the Warhawks in set two, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The two teams played evenly for a majority of the way, but another 6-0 spurt by Whitewater to end the set capped off their 25-14 victory.
Augie fought back from another early six-point deficit in game three. Trailing 13-7, the Vikings stormed back to eventually pull within a point at 17-16. After Whitewater responded with four points in a row, Augustana rattled off four straight of their own to remain within striking distance before forcing a deadlock at 23 points apiece. The Vikings faced sat at set point following two of the next three points going their way, but the Warhawks capped off the 29-27 win with five of the final seven scores.
Emily Schipper was the team leader in kills with 10, while
Grace Vranicar posted a match-high 19 digs.
The Vikings drop to 10-3 with the loss. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, September 27 when they visit Illinois Wesleyan.
