Men's tennis concludes Cornell Invitational

Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team completed their second individual tournament of the fall over the weekend, seeing success across the board at the Cornell Invitational.

In the top singles flight, Arthur Hermange won both his matches, defeating Grinnell and Central. In his match with Grinnell, Hermange bounced back from a first-set loss to take set two and eventually win the tiebreaker 10-7. David Larraga also saw success in the A flight, defeating Central in his second match. In flight B for singles, Gabriel Luna won his first contest against Cornell, also bouncing back from a opening-set defeat to eventually win in a tiebreaker. As a group, the Vikings won four of five tiebreakers over the weekend.

The C flight for singles featured a pair of Vikings as Deepak Vayara and Timothee Philip combined to go 4-0 on the weekend. Vayara added to the tiebreaker success for Augustana, winning his second singles match in a 10-8 deciding set after dropping the first and winning the second. In flight D, Tomas Jimenez and Aingeru Garcia both bounced back from losses with wins in their second match. In the extra flight, Collin Bush went 2-0.

In doubles, Hermange and Larraga went 1-1 in the top flight, defeating Central 8-1 after falling in a close 8-6 battle to Grinnell. Philip and Gustavo Fontenelle in the C flight and Garcia and Jimenez in the D flight also went 1-1 in doubles competition. 

The Vikings will host Wartburg on Tuesday, September 19 for their first dual meet of the season.
