ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team wrapped up the Viking Classic on Saturday with a 1-1 record, falling to the UW-Platteville Pioneers by a score of 3-1 before defeating the Clarkson Golden Knights 3-2.
Match One (L 3-1 UW-Platteville)
Augustana and Platteville began their match with a back-and-forth battle until Augie broke away from a 15-14 game with a 6-1 run to pull out in front. The Pioneers never inched closer and the Vikings gained a 1-0 advantage in the match following their seven-point opening-set victory.
Another close set ensued, but this time it was Platteville that used a late run to claim momentum. Trailing 23-18, the Vikings rattled off six points in a row to reach set point, fueled by three consecutive kills from
Syd Krueger. After finding themselves evened up at 25-25, the Pioneers strung together back-to-back scores to hang on for the 27-25 win. The visitors went on to secure wins in the final two sets to hand Augie their first loss of the season.
Emily Schipper and
Jaden Julius led the Vikings in kills with 15 and 14, respectively, while
Grace Vranicar added 26 digs.
Match Two (W 3-2 vs. Clarkson)
The first sets of the weekend finale were all Augustana, putting up dominating efforts with 25-14 and 25-15 wins. In each of the two victories, the Vikings had scoring runs of seven or more points, including a 10-0 burst in game two that turned a four-point deficit into a six-point lead. Three straight service aces from
Kylie Collachia put the exclamation point on the team's set two win.
The Golden Knights answered with wins in each of the third and fourth sets to force a fifth and final game. Augie stormed out in the fifth set with the first eight points score, highlighted by two aces from
Leah Rizzo. The closest Clarkson got the rest of the way was within five as the Vikings cruised to the victory to grab their 10th win of the year.Â
Schipper hit .353 in the win, tallying 17 kills to lead the offensive attack. Krueger was next with seven, while four players racked up double-digit digs.Â
Amelie Baehr-Ross and Schipper were named to the 2023 Viking Classic All-Tournament Team.
Augie will step back into conference play on Tuesday, September 19 when they visit North Central.
