Box Score PLAINFIELD, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team completed their first competition of the 2023-24 season over the weekend, taking part in the CCIW Individual Tournament hosted by North Central.
In the top singles flight,
Arthur Hermange took fourth place overall. The reigning CCIW Player of the Year won his first match on Saturday, but fell to North Central to move him into the third-place match, where he was also defeated by an opponent from North Central. In flight two,
David Larraga took a similar path, winning his first match in a tiebreaker before dropping his next two matches to earn fourth overall. Also in flight two,
Gabriel Luna bounced back from consecutive defeats to claim seventh place with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 win over North Central.
In singles flight three,
Nicolas Navarro and
Timothee Philip both lost then won their first two matches, setting up a head-to-head clash for fifth place. Navarro was victorious over Philip, winning by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Gustavo Fontenelle and
Aingeru Garcia also mirrored the same path in flight four, but the match for fifth was not played between the two Vikings.
Arthur Mendes and
Eliot Saint-Paul both won a match over the weekend in the No. 5 and 6 flights to earn sixth and seventh, respectively.
Caspar Jung defeated Illinois Wesleyan and North Central to move onto the championship in flight seven, but fell to North Central by a score of 6-3, 6-1.Â
In doubles, Luna and Hermange picked up two wins on Sunday to earn fifth place in the top flight, while Larraga and Philip knocked off teammates Navarro and Fontenelle in the third-place match by a score of 8-6 in flight No. 2. After winning their first two matches, Garcia and Mendes fell in both contests on Sunday to land them in fourth in flight No. 3, while Jung and Saint-Paul capped off their undefeated weekend with a title match win over North Central in flight four.Â
The team will be back in action on September 17-18 at the Cornell Invitational.Â
