Under first-year Director of Golf Tom Lawrence, who has coached the women's team for the past 10 seasons, the Augustana men's golf team began a new chapter in the program's history. The Vikings competed in 10 events in 2022-23 and tabbed an eighth-place finish at the CCIW Championships in early May.
The Vikings opened their season on September 1 at the Clarke Fall Invitational, finishing 10th out of 17 teams in the first of two visits to Galena, Ill. The team returned home the following day to host 11 programs for the Highland Classic in Rock Island. Tyler Langel posted a collegiate-best 73 on the second day of competition to finish in the top five and propel Augie to a fifth-place finish. Langel's 148 two-day total was the best 36-hole performance this season for the Vikings.
First-year golfers Noah Ehlenbach and Aaron Rogers led the team in the next two tournaments, with Rogers finishing 12th individually at the Clarke Fall Classic and Ehlenbach carding a 153 to help the Vikings finish 16th out of 27 teams at the Midwest Region Classic in Kansasville, Wis. Augie concluded the fall season 10th at the CCIW Preview and 14th at the Region V Preview, where Adam Soczka led the Vikings in par-threes, par-fours, and par-fives.
Following a spring break trip to Florida, the team competed at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational, with Langel leading the way with his 34th individual finish. Soczka topped the Vikings with scores of 76 and 77 at the Blueboy Spring Invite, while Ehlenbach tied Langel with a 150 total at the Viking Invitational to round out the month of April.
Augustana concluded their 2023 schedule at Whitetail Ridge Golf Club in Yorkville, Ill. for the CCIW Championship. The Vikings opened the tournament with a total team score of 307 to sit in fourth after day one. Soczka led the team in the opening round with a 69, shooting 2-under with a pair of birdies and an eagle on the 13th hole to post the program's first under-par performance since 2014. Soczka's round was also the best by an Augustana player since Alex Sierra carded a 68 on September 6, 2017. Ehlenbach shot a 76 in round one to place him 15th, carding three birdies towards a -1 total on the front nine. The Vikings slid down to eighth after a 328 score on day two but entered Saturday just five strokes out of fourth place. The team could not make up ground in the standings, shooting 319 in the final round.
Soczka finished tied for 15th and carded a 231 with rounds of 69, 81, and 81. His top-15 individual finish at the conference tournament was the best for the program since Jack Neenan secured 12th in 2021. Augie's second score came from Ehlenbach, who finished 27th overall with 238 behind round scores of 76, 78, and 84. Langel and Jonah Snelling rounded out the scoring efforts for the Vikings, finishing 33rd and 37th with scores of 243 and 246, respectively.
