ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With her sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships on Thursday, Gabriela Loiz became Augustana's first women's All-American in the high jump since 1997 and fifth all-time to achieve All-American status in the event in program history.
The senior from Davenport, Iowa launched for the first time in the competition just after 5:00 p.m. CDT, leaping 1.61m in just one attempt. Advancing to 1.66m, she failed to clear on her first attempt but successfully made it over on the second to advance to the next height. Loiz tied her personal best jump the following round at 1.69m to guarantee All-American status as one of seven participants to move on to the next stage. After bowing out at 1.72m, she finished in sixth place overall.
Loiz moves half an inch ahead of Kim Wallace (1994) and Kathy Johnson (1986) to claim third place in the Augustana high jump record books at 5-6.5 feet. Her previous best of 1.68m came at the CCIW Outdoor Championships, where she won the event.
Her finish now makes it the second straight season the Augustana women's program has boasted an All-American at the DIII Outdoor National Championships.
