Men's tennis begins CCIW play at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team will begin conference play on Friday, March 24 when they visit the Illinois Wesleyan Titans.

Augustana enters CCIW action with a 4-3 overall record, most recently picking up two road wins last weekend over Dubuque and Illinois College by identical scores of 9-0. Against the Spartans, the Vikings jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. At No. 2 and 3, the duos of Timothee Philip/Gustavo Fontenelle and Arthur Mendes/Arturo Asensio each won their matches by a score of 8-2, while Gabriel Luna and Arthur Hermange took the No. 1 spot with a final of 8-4. All six singles were won in consecutive sets by Augustana to complete the 9-0 win. Philip at No. 3 and Mendes at No. 4 each posted a flawless performances with 6-0, 6-0 wins, while Hermange, Luna and Fontenelle each earned one 6-0 victory on their way to their respective match wins. Collin Bush grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 to close out the successful day for the Vikings.

On Sunday against the Blueboys, the Vikings swept all three doubles matches on their way to an early 3-0 advantage. Mendes and Jesse Dyer were flawless in their win at No. 3 doubles, winning by a score of 8-0. Nicolas Navarro and Eliot Saint-Paul took down their opponent at No. 2 by a score of 8-1, while Deepak Vayara and Quentin Essayie grabbed an 8-2 victory at the top spot. In singles, Augustana claimed all six matches, three being won by 6-0, 6-0 scores from Navarro, Mendes, and Saint-Paul at No. 3, 4, and 5. Essayie and Vayara were victorious at the top two singles positions, while Emilio Rodriguez closed out the 9-0 win with a triumph at No. 6 singles, beating his opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-1.

Illinois Wesleyan currently possesses an 8-4 overall record and are winners of its last four matches. The Titans wrapped up a 4-0 trip to Orlando, Fla. last Friday with a 9-0 victory over Franciscan. The Vikings and Titans have two common opponents so far this season, with Augie going 2-0 against Cornell and Coe, while Illinois Wesleyan split their matches between the two.

The Vikings lead the all-time series over the Titans 47-12 and have won the last eight dating back to 2014. Augustana won last season's meeting in Rock Island by a score of 6-3.

Start time on Saturday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
