Men's tennis ready for pair of weekend road matches

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team will hit the road on Match 18-19 when they visit the Dubuque Spartans and Illinois College Blueboys for a pair of non-conference matches.

Augustana currently sits at 2-3 on the season after dropping a close contest to the Hope Flying Dutch last Saturday. Hope took a 2-1 lead afters double play, winning the No. 1 and 2 matches. Augustana salvaged a point at No. 3 as Gustavo Fontenelle and Timothee Philip earned a win with an 8-6 score. The two teams split singles matches, each winning three. Deepak Vayara secured an early win for the Vikings at No. 3, defeating his opponent by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Gabriel Luna grabbed a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4, while Philip squeaked out a 7-6 (9), 7-5 win at No. 5. The Flying Dutch took the matches at No. 1 and No. 6, as well as a three-set victory over Quentin Essayie at No. 2.

On Saturday, the Vikings begin with a showdown with Dubuque, who sit at 2-5 on the year. The Spartans have dropped three of their last four outings, most recently falling to UW-La Crosse by a score of 9-0 last Sunday. Dubuque defeated Lawrence last Sunday as well, splitting a pair of matches on the day. Augustana has won 21 of the 22 all-time meetings between the two programs, including a 9-0 win in their last encounter in 2021. Start time on Saturday is scheduled for 11 a.m.

On Sunday, Augustana heads to Illinois College to wrap up their weekend. The Blueboys are 0-9 this season, falling to Illinois Valley by a score of 8-1 in their last match. Of their nine losses, seven have come by way of 9-0 scores. Sunday will be the first-ever meeting between Augustana and Illinois College. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
