HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's tennis teams will continue their stretch away from home on Saturday, March 11 when they visit the Hope Flying Dutch.
The Augie women currently sit at 7-5 on the season after picking up a pair of wins over Cornell and Coe last weekend. In their first match of the day, the Vikings earned a sweep in doubles over Cornell, led by
Grace Rider and
Mia Reese's 8-1 win at No. 3. All six contests in singles were won in consecutive sets by Augustana.
Michaela Magee nearly posted a clean match, winning over her opponent at No. 2 by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Lily Schoeck at No. 1 and
Hannah Colbert at No. 3 also posted 6-0 scores in their wins, while
Natasha Gauerke,
Lauren Oda, and
Hattie Timerman rounded out the 9-0 win for the Vikings.
In match two, Augie grabbed two of three doubles matches for the early 2-1 lead. Oda and Schoeck were victorious at the No. 2 position by a score of 8-4, while
Caitlyn Hanulikova and Colbert squeaked out an 8-7 win at the top spot. The Vikings wrapped up the match with five wins in singles play. Hanulikova, Magee, and Colbert won their matches at No. 2, 3, and 4 by identical scores of 6-1, 6-1, while Oda secured the victory at No. 6 by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Schoeck won her first set at No. 1 by a score of 6-3, but fell in the second by the same score. She battled back to win her match with a 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
Hanulikova was named the CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week following her 3-0 individual performance.
The Hope women are 2-3 on the year, dropping their most recent contest to Denison by a score of 9-0 last Saturday. Augustana is 1-5 all-time against Hope and has lost four straight against the Flying Dutch dating back to 2015.
On the men's side, the Vikings are also coming off wins over Coe and Cornell to improve to 2-2 on the season. In their first match of the day against Coe, the Vikings fell behind early after dropping two of three doubles matches. Augie salvaged a point at the No. 2 position as
Gabriel Luna and
Nicolas Navarro earned a hard-fought 8-6 victory. Needing four wins to take the match, the Vikings grabbed four singles wins exactly, led by victories at the No. 1 and 2 positions from
Arthur Hermange and
Quentin Essayie. Hermange defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-4, while Essayie battled back from a first set loss to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Deepak Vayara had a similar battle at No. 4, coming back from a first-set deficit to win in three, while Luna took two very close sets at No. 5 to help seal the match for Augustana.
The Vikings began their match against Cornell with three wins in doubles. Augustana took five of six singles matches to coast to the win. All five wins came in consecutive sets, with Navarro posting a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4. Luna and
Eliot Saint-Paul also posted clean sets in their victories at No. 3 and No. 5.
Luna was named the CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week after posting a 4-0 individual effort.
The Hope men are 1-4 on the year and recently were defeated by Lawrence Tech by a final of 5-4. Augustana is 2-0 all-time against Hope, with their most recent encounter coming in 2021, a 5-4 victory for the Vikings.
Start time on Saturday for both matches is scheduled for 4 p.m. CST.
