Vikings complete busy weekend in South Dakota and Iowa

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Augustana men's and women's indoor track and field teams sent a split group to two different meets over the weekend, competing at the SDSU Indoor Classic Friday through Saturday and the Grinnell Invitational on Saturday. The Viking men earned six points in South Dakota, while the women's team did not tally a team score. The Augie women finished third out of nine teams at the Grinnell, while the men finished fifth out of 10 programs.

Augie opened their weekend slate on Friday in Brookings, S.D. for the two-day SDSU Indoor Classic, featuring over 30 track and field programs from across the nation at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex. The Vikings brought 14 athletes to the highly-touted event.

Carson Eipers highlighted Augustana's field efforts by finishing third in the weight throw competition with a toss of 18.82 meters. Heather Michalski also ascended the program ranks with her heave of 13.93 meters, moving her to ninth all-time.

Anna Boardman's time of 18:34.58 in the women's 5000 meter places her sixth in program history. Emma Odle recorded a personal best time of 5:26.54 in the one-mile run. Joe Langridge shined in the 3000-meter run, finishing 20th out of 87 participants with an 8:35.57 time that ranks him eighth in program history. Rounding out the long-distance competition for the Vikings was Grant Ackard, who ran a personal best time of 15:39.

On Saturday, the Vikings attended the Grinnell Pioneers' 12th annual Darren Young Invitational. The women's team finished third out of nine teams in attendance, with three top placements, while the men finished sixth out of 10 teams, also boasting three top placements.

McKenzie Reser led the women's squad with a pair of first-place finishes. Reser won the 60-meter sprint with a time of 7.89 and the 200-meter sprint at 26.40. Sammi Anselme took first in the triple jump competition with her leap of 9.94 meters. Anselme's teammate, Portia Carrera, finished fifth in the event with a 9.24-meter leap. Notably, Anselme also finished third in the pole vault competition with a launch of 2.43 meters.

Seth Sottos earned a top placement in the 60-meter dash for the men with his time of 6.98. Trailing him was teammate Sean Abracia-Wendel, who finished fourth with a time of 7.16. Sottos also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.86. Also, in the 200-meter sprint, Connor McBride earned a top placement with his 22.47 time, adding 10 points. McBride also finished second in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 50.73. Finishing narrowly behind him in the event was teammate Cameron Tomko, who placed third at 51.80.

The men's 4x400 relay team of McBride, Tomko, Braeden Clements and Jason Smith produced the final top placement for the Vikings, running a time of 3:28.75 and earning 10 points. 

The Vikings return to action on Friday, February 17, at the Spartan Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa.
