Men's water polo falls to No. 1 CMS in national semifinal

The Vikings will compete for third place on Sunday

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team was defeated by the No. 1 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags on Saturday in the USA Water Polo DIII national semifinal, falling by a score of 12-4.

The Stags earned the game's first goal two minutes in, but the Vikings quickly found the equalizer on a Rhys Lomax score with 4:54 to go in the opening frame. Back-to-back scores from the visitors pushed the margin to two, but another answer from Augie made it a 3-2 game after Stevan Rasic found the back of the net on a powerplay. A last-second tally from CMS brought the score to 4-2 after eight minutes of action.

The first four goals of the second period went in favor of CMS as they pushed the differential out to six. Declan Hutton notched a goal with just two seconds remaining to bring Augie within five at the break. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pulled away with a 4-0 advantage in the third before Augie took the fourth with a 1-0 margin to conclude the game at its 12-4 final. Joseph Addison accounted for the final tally for Augustana.

Hutton stopped 11 shots in net.

Augustana will now gear its attention to the third-place match tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
