HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team returns to play as they head north for the Hope Post Final Jam, where they will face off against the No. 16 Hope Flying Dutch on Tuesday, December 19, and the Alma Scots on Wednesday, December 20.
The Vikings head into the two non-conference games with a 6-4 record after dominating North Park 66-34 back on December 9. Augustana started the contest with a strong defensive display, holding North Park to a shooting percentage of 19 and just eight points, while Augie notched 18 points on 47 percent shooting in the first. In the second, the defense remained dominant as Augie held North Park to just four made shots, and posted their best offensive quarter with 19 points, generating a 37-20 score heading into halftime.
Augie held on to their momentum returning from the halftime break and increased their gap with a 16-9 margin. The Vikings held North Park to just four made field goals for the second straight quarter and nearly doubled up the score at 53-29 heading into the final 10 minutes of play. The last minutes of the contest were low-scoring for both teams. Most of the points came from the charity line as Augie obtained five points and North Park grabbed three in a 13-5 fourth-quarter advantage.
This will be the Vikings' second battle against Hope, with the Flying Dutch holding a 1-0 record over Augie. Their last matchup dates to the 1994-95 season, where the Flying Dutch defeated Augie 70-63. Hope enters the contest with an 8-1 record on the season and is 6-0 at home. Hope comes from an MIAA conference victory on Saturday, December 9 against the Calvin Knights, where the final score was 52-32. Hope shot 29 percent from the field in the win.
Wednesday's meeting will be the first showdown between Augustana and Alma. The Scots sit at 6-5 on the season and enter the mid-week contest following an MIAA conference loss to Calvin on Saturday, where they fell 73-66. The Scots shot 33 percent from the field, 36 percent from the arc, and were 9-17 at the charity line.
