Men’s wrestling accomplishes 3-1 record at Kalahari Duals

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team competed in four dual meets on Saturday at the Kalahari Duals, picking up wins over Olivet, Waynesburg, and Otterben. The Vikings' loss came in a two-point defeat to No. 16 Loras.

The first face-off of the day was against the Olivet Comets, where Augie earned a 31-14 victory with seven individual victories. The Vikings won the first two matches, beginning with Khadyn Jacobs earning six points in the 125 weight class due to fall. Trevor Boryla grabbed the 133 division by a 20-4 technical fall. Both teams went back-and-forth for the next five rounds, with the Comets taking three wins over that span. The Vikings won the final three contests to seal the match. Clay DeBaillie received a 12-3 major decision in 184, and Jacob Badger grabbed the 197 class by an 18-1 technical fall. In the last showdown, Josh Woodrey earned a 9-0 major decision in the 285 weight division. 

The Vikings' next matchup was against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, where Augustana won by a score of 48-6. Augie secured every weight class except for one, starting in the 125 weight division with Jacobs converting a fall. Both Boryla in the 133 category and Samuel Deyro in 141 won their matches via forfeit. Michael Macias produced a fall over the Yellow Jackets in the 149 class and Jack Miller won by a 7-0 decision in 157. Ray Herd grabbed a fall win in the 165 weight division and Waynesburg secured the 174 class. Augie finished out the contest with three straight wins, starting with Braiden Young's 4-3 decision in 184. Anthony Joyner in 197 and Teke Nieto in 285 earned victories by falls in their divisions.

The third round of the day was against No. 16 Loras Duhawks, where Augie lost a close battle with a score of 24-22. Augie won five of the 10 battles, starting with Jack Reina in the 125 weight division, who secured a fall against the Duhawks. Boryla earned a 16-1 technical fall in the 133 division, and Loras followed with a victory in the 141 class. Macias switched the outcome back to Augie and grasped a 6-5 decision in the 149 category. Loras defeated the Vikings in the next four matches before Augustana closed out the dual with a major decision from Jacob Badger in the 197 with a 21-7 outcome and Josh Woodrey in 285 with a score of 9-0 decision.

The final showdown of the day was against Otterbein, where the Vikings obtained a 26-17 victory. Augie secured six individual successes beginning with Reina in 125 with a 27-17 major decision. Boryla followed with a fall over his opponent in 133 and Otterbein secured the 141 and 149 matches. Miller turned it back around with a 15-0 technical fall in the 157 category and Patting earned an 8-1 sudden victory in the 165 weight class. Otterbein snatched the 174 and 185 weight divisions, while Augie closed out the weekend with a major decision from Badger in 197 with a 16-5 outcome and Woodrey, who projected a 13-2 result. 

With the results from the Kalahari Duals, Augie increases their record to 6-5 on the season. The Vikings will return to action on Wednesday, January 3 for a dual battle against St. Ambrose.
