Women's volleyball splits final two matches of Pumpkin Bash

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday on the final day of the home Pumpkin Bash, defeating the Coe Kohawks in straight sets before falling to the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves in five.

It was the second meeting of the season on Saturday between Augustana and Coe. After falling behind 4-1 to begin the opening frame, the Vikings took control with an 8-1 run moments later to put themselves out in front. Coe trimmed a five-point differential down to one at 12-11, but another scoring surge created separation for Augie. Leading 19-16, the Vikings rattled off the final six points of the set, seeing two kills from Jaden Julius and three service aces from Emily Schipper to close things out.

Following another early deficit, the Vikings claimed momentum with an early scoring outburst in the second set. A 6-1 spurt moved the score to 9-6 in favor of the Vikings, but the Kohawks quickly took it back moments later at 11-10. Coe held a small lead before pushing it out to three at 18-15, but was then met with a 6-0 run from Augie to flip the three-point advantage the other way. A pair of kills from Kira Nelson canceled out two scores from the Kohawks before the Vikings grabbed the final three points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

It was a back-and-forth third set, with neither squad holding a lead of more than two points until the Vikings snagged a 20-17 advantage. Their three-point margin remained intact for several rallies and set up three match points prior to Coe tying the game at 24-all. Kills from Julius and Nelson negated the threat as Augie completed the 3-0 sweep.

Schipper led the way with 15 kills to lead the Vikings, followed closely behind by Julius with 14. Grace Vranicar notched 20 digs, while Amelie Baehr-Ross averaged over 12 assists per set in the three-set win.

Following the win over Coe, the Vikings dropped their regular season finale to Nebraska Wesleyan by a score of 3-2. After winning the first two sets, the Prairie Wolves cruised to a set three victory before squeaking out a two-point win in the fourth to force a deciding game. The visitors took the fifth by a score of 15-12 to complete the come-from-behind triumph.

Schipper, Julius, and Nelson all had double-digit kills to lead Augie, while four others had double-digit digs, led by Vranicar's 23. Both Schipper and Julius were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Vikings wrap up the regular season with a 23-7 record will begin their postseason run on Tuesday at Illinois Wesleyan.
