Beinborn snatches 1,000-point achievement in win over Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team competed against the Fontbonne Griffins to conclude their weekend in Missouri on Sunday, outscoring the Griffins 82-47.

The Vikings started the game off strong offensively, putting up 23 points in the first quarter, nine coming from Macy Beinborn. The Vikings also had a balanced effort on the glass, snatching two defensive and eight offensive rebounds in the quarter. Both teams shot above 45 percent in the quarter, but Augustana held a slight 23-20 lead after making three additional shots.

The Vikings had a strong second quarter, creating a 22-5 margin by making nine shots on 50 percent shooting, while the Griffins made just one of their 10 attempts. Augie continued to lead in rebounds with a 13-4 margin. With a fast break layup from Kadence Tatum at the halftime buzzer, the Vikings took a 20-point lead into the break with a 45-25 score.

Returning from the halftime break, the Vikings maintained a slight advantage in the third quarter over the Griffins, keeping the lead throughout the third quarter. Both teams had a close battle in the quarter as Augustana had eight made shots, while Fontbonne posted five to create an 18-16 margin. 

Augie maintained their momentum in the game's final stretch, adding to their differential with a 19-point fourth quarter. The Vikings hit eight shots in the frame and held Fontbonne to just one made shot for the second time in the contest. Augie cruised to a 13-point margin in the fourth to finish out the game with the 35-point victory. 

Augustana had 12 individuals contribute to Sunday's score, led by Beinborn with 21 points. Her made layup early in the third quarter gave her over 1,000 career points at Augustana. She is now the 14th player in program history to eclipse that mark. Cali Papez was the next highest scorer for the Vikings, finishing 7-7 in field goals to tally 14 points with six rebounds. Tatum also added 10 assists.

The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team improves to 3-3 and will stay on the road and travel to Decatur, Ill. for the first CCIW conference battle of the season against the No. 24 Millikin Big Blue on Wednesday, November 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
