Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team claimed its second straight MPSF East title on Sunday, defeating the Austin 'Roos by a score of 13-4.
Rhys Lomax put the Vikings on the board first with the game's first goal two minutes in. The two teams played nearly four minutes of scoreless action until Augie added another with a score from
Joseph Addison. Austin answered with two tallies of their own to close out the first and make it a 2-2 game after eight minutes of action.
Augustana broke away from Austin with a 4-1 second quarter to bring a 6-3 advantage into halftime.
Colin McDowell put the Vikings out in front with the first score of the frame, followed by one from Lomax before the 'Roos tallied another.
Ian Palmroos and
Oskar Bannister accounted for the final two points of the first half, finding the back of the net within 21 seconds of each other to extend the team's cushion to three.
The offenses simmered down a bit in the third, with the Vikings taking a slight to 2-1 advantage in the period.
James Davis and Palmroos accounted for the two goals for Augie to keep their score doubled up over the 'Roos. The Augustana defense shut out Austin over the final eight minutes and put up a five spot in the fourth to complete the 13-4 win. Addison scored three times in the final quarter, while Bannister added two.
Addison led the team for the Vikings with four goals on four shots, while Bannister and Palmroos were the team leaders in assists with two apiece.
Declan Hutton earned the win in net, finishes with 10 saves and two steals.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 15-6 and finish the year a perfect 8-0 against conference opponents. The victory is also the second in a row over Austin in the MPSF East title game. The team now qualifies for the 2023 USA Water Polo National Tournament, which they will host in Rock Island on December 2-3.
