GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams fell in a dual meet to the Grinnell Pioneers on Saturday. The men were defeated by a score of 162-120, while the women dropped a close 149-136 final.
"I am extremely proud of how our team raced and competed today, especially where we put people in off events," said head coach
Dan Lloyd. "It was a great competition and we showed a lot of heart in racing events we typically don't swim."
On the women's side, the Vikings picked up several wins throughout the day.
Olivia White was the first-place finisher in the 1000-yard freestyle, ending with a mark of 11:08.19.
Brooke Walker took home first in the 200-yard free, clocking a time of 2:02.38. She was followed in second by
Jenna Hale. Walker also earned first in the 500-free race. In the 50-yard free,
Kendle Mihm was the winner with a time of 25.13. The Vikings grabbed four of the top five places in the event.
Mara Walker led the charge in the 100-free, finishing with a mark of 54.91. Mihm also came in second in the event.
In relays, the team of M. Walker,
Hailey Glasnovich,
Caitlin Stoddard, and Mihm won the 200-yard free, clocking a time of 1:40.92, nearly two seconds ahead of the second-place team.
In diving events,
Kaite Zaborenko claimed the win in the 3-meter dive.
On the men's side,
Michael Garland was the winner in the 100-breast, ending with a mark of 59.86, the lone swimmer to finish under a minute. In the 50-free,
Jack Brandt claimed first with a time of 21.67, while
Albert Buvary grabbed third. Luke Rettig won the 100-free race, earning a final time of 47.85, while
Nathan Mesina was triumphant in the 200-IM with a finish of 2:02.06.
In relays, the 200-free team of Rettig, Brandt, Buvary, and
Kacper Cebula secured first in the event with a time of 1:25.98.
Both the Augie men's and women's teams drop to 3-1 with the losses. The teams will be back in action December 1-2 at the Wheaton Invite.
