EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's wrestling teams competed at the UWEC 8-Man and 8-Woman Battles on Saturday, November 18. The men placed second with 86.5 points and the women had no team score.
The women's team finished with four champions, three runner-ups, and a third-place finish. Sandie Pfeil was the first champion for the Vikings as she pinned her way through the 123 weight class. Aine Moffit was the next winner for Augie as she conquered the 155 division with a fall and a technical fall. In the 170 group, Sawyer Graham won both of her matches by a fall and a technical fall, resulting in a first-place finish. The last first-place individual was Angie Guy, who pinned both opponents for the win.
Other top finishers for the women were Lanie Cecala in the 143 weight class, who won four out of five rounds with two decisions, a fall, and a forfeit to earn a second-place finish. Jaiden Moody also obtained second in the 155 class as she pinned her first opponent and won by fall in round two. Monica Griffin grabbed second in the 130 division after competing in five rounds, winning the first four rounds with two falls and two technical falls. Sydney Tajkowski took third for the Vikings in 136, partaking in three rounds and earning a victory in one by a fall.
Jacob Badger was the top individual for the men's team as he won the 197-pound bracket and was voted most outstanding wrestler of the tournament by the coaches. Badger had two falls, a major decision, and a decision in his four battles. Samuel Deyro earned a second-place finish in 133 with a bye in the quarterfinals and a decision in the semifinals, but fell in the first-place match. Chris Sitter also obtained second at the 125 flight division, with a fall, sudden victory, and major decision over his opponents.
Other top finishers for the men were Colin Roque, who grabbed third in the 141 division. He won by fall in the quarterfinal and by major decision in the third place match. Michael Macias was third in gold 149 with a major decision win and medical forfeit. In the 157 category, Jack Miller snatched third, while Braiden Young was also a third-place finish for the Vikings in the 184 class. The last top finisher for Augie was Anthony Joyner in the 285 class, winning two of four matches in a major decision and technical foul.
The Augustana Vikings men and women will stay on the road as they head to Naperville, Ill. for a CCIW conference dual against North Central on Wednesday, November 22. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m. for the women and 6 p.m. for the men.
