Swimming & diving teams improve to 3-0 with home win over Titans

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams earned their third win in as many dual meets this season on Saturday, each picking up wins over the Illinois Wesleyan Titans at home. The men were victorious by a score of 205-72, while the women won by a final of 208-82.

"Today was an outstanding day for our program to have our first home meet of the season," said head coach Dan Lloyd. "I am proud of the way our team stepped up to fight for every finish. The meet really showed the great depth of our program and how well our team comes together in competition. I am extremely proud of our team."

On the women's side, the Vikings took first in 11 of 14 swim events, including two relays. The 200-medley relay team of Hailey Glasnovich, Livy Sholl, Zoe Heiar, and Kendle Mihm grabbed first with a time of 1:50.83, nearly six seconds ahead of Illinois Wesleyan in second. In the 400-free, Mihm, Caitlin Stoddard, Isabelle Sansom, and Mara Walker claimed first with a mark of 3:46.04.

In the 1000-free, Brooke Walker and Bella Casanovas went first and second for Augie, while the Vikings secured the top three spots in the 200-free, led by M. Walker's first-place time of 1:58.16. Elsewhere, Glasnovich took first in the 100-back, beating out her opponent in second by .30. Sholl was the winner of the 100-breast by nearly three seconds and Casanovas won the 200-fly to continue the success for the Augustana. The team also notched the top three spots in the 50-free, led by Mihm with a time of 25.16. In the 100-yard free, the top four spots went to Augie, with Olivia White taking first with a mark of 55.97. M. Walker and Heiar rounded out the wins with triumphs in the 500-free and 100-fly. 

In diving events, Kate Kucera claimed the 1-meter, while Kaite Zaborenko took first in the 3-meter.

On the men's side, the 200-medley team of Dante Rinaldi, Kacper Cebula, Lucas Rettig, and Jack Brandt won first with a time of 1:37.43, beating out fellow teammates by two seconds. In the 400, the Vikings squad of Cebula, Rettig, Albert Buvary, and Oskar Bannister defeated the second place team from Illinois Wesleyan by over five seconds.

Separated by just .71, Bannister and Gavin McCorry went one and two in the 200-free to help highlight the individual success. In the 100-back, the top three spots went Augie's way, led by Rettig in first and Cesar Castillo and Rinaldi in second and third. Castillo also took first in the 200-back. Cebula was crowned the winner of the 100-back with his time of 101.35, while Bannister earned wins in both the 50 and 100. In the 200-breast, Michael Garland added his name as a first-place finisher, ending with a time of 2:14.68, over five seconds ahead of second. Rettig and Cebula also added wins in the 100-fly and 200-IM.

In diving, Shazil Farhan and Fernando Munguia were the winners in the 1-meter and 3-meter.

With the wins, both teams improve to 3-0 on the year. The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday, November 18 when they visit Grinnell.
