Women's tennis hits the road for pair of conference matches

ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team will be back in action on Friday, October 6 and Saturday, October 7 when they hit the road to take on the Elmhurst Bluejays and Wheaton Thunder.

The Vikings currently sit at both 2-2 overall and in conference play following a 5-4 defeat at home on Wednesday to the North Park Vikings. The visitors grabbed two of three doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles action. Anna-Maria Huebel and Natasha Gauerke salvaged a point for the Vikings at No. 2 doubles, earning an 8-5 victory. In singles, North Park snagged three of the first four matches to clinch the match with their fifth victory of the contest. Maitreyi Shrikhande grabbed a win at the No. 6 spot to give Augie a point early on in singles, followed by wins at No. 1 from Huebel and No. 4 from Hannah Colbert.

Elmhurst enters Friday with a 1-4 overall record and 0-3 mark in the CCIW. The Bluejays are riding a two-match losing streak, recently falling on the road by a score of 7-2 against Illinois Wesleyan. Elmhurst's lone victory this year came back on September 28, an 8-1 victory over McHenry.

The Vikings have won all 35 meetings against the Bluejays all-time. Augustana claimed the victory in last year's encounter in Rock Island by a final score of 8-1.

Start time on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m.

On Saturday, the Vikings will face the Wheaton Thunder at 11 a.m. The Thunder currently sit with a 5-2 overall record and 4-1 mark in conference action. Wheaton has won four of their last five matches, including a 9-0 victory over Elmhurst last Friday to get back in the win column following their lone conference defeat to North Central. The Thunder are 4-2 at home this season.

Augustana is 19-40 all-time against Wheaton. The Thunder won last season's meeting in Rock Island by a score of 8-1.
