Swimming & diving teams improve to 2-0 with wins over Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams both picked up wins over the Monmouth Fighting Scots on Friday to improve to 2-0 on the season. The men were victorious by a final of 144-38, while the women won with a score of 153-31. The Vikings won every event except one between the two teams.

On the men's side, the Vikings won both relays, starting with the 200-yard medley team comprised of Dante Rinaldi, Michael Garland, Hunter Craft, and Tommy Anderson, who won the event by less than a second over their fellow teammates. The 200-yard freestyle relay team was dominant in their win as Lucas Rettig, Kacper Cebula, Cesar Castillo, and Jack Brandt clocked a time of 1:28:58 to win by over 11 seconds.

In the 200-yard freestyle race, Cebula earned another first-place finish with a time of 1:48.60, followed in second by Brandt and in third by Lorenzo Moreno. The Vikings took the top six in the 50-free, led by Rettig in first with a time of 22.09. Garland was the winner in the 200-yard IM with a final mark of 2:04.78, while Craft won the 100-fly at 54.57. Elsewhere, Gavin McCorry was the champion of the 500-free, clocking a 5:09.10 to win by over 16 seconds. Nathan Mesina squeaked out a win in the 100-breast with a time of 1:02.36.

For the women, Augie also took first in both relays. In the 200-yard medley relay, Emily Martin, Logan Alsop, Zoe Heiar, and Kylee Blaha clocked a time of 1:56.97 to beat out another Augustana squad in second. Caitlin Stoddard, Kendle Mihm, Hailey Glasnovich, and Isabelle Sansom grabbed first in the 200-free relay with a final mark of 1:43.34.

All of the individual events went in favor of the Augustana women. Olivia White won the 200-yard free style by .05 over teammate Bella Casanovas, while Glasnovich also squeaked out a win in the 50-free, edging her opponent from Monmouth by .36. Mara Walker cruised to a victory in the 200-yard IM, winning with a time of 2:17.01. In the 100-yard fly, Annabella Valenti notched a time of 1:05.45 to claim first, while Mihm was the winner of the 100-yard freestyle after finishing in 57.36. Glasnovich won her second event of the night in the 100-breast with a final time of 1:01.21. In the 500, Brooke Walker took first in front of two other Vikings in second and third. 

Both the men and women improve to 2-0 with the victories. Both squads will be back in action on Saturday at the Illinois Wesleyan Halloween Invite. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
