MEQUON, Wis. – The Augie men's wrestling team traveled to the CCIW Duals on Saturday, January 21. The Vikings defeated Concordia-Wisconsin in their second dual, but were bested by Aurora and Wheaton in their other two matches.
Augie opened this weekend's conference competition by facing off against the Aurora Spartans. After dropping the opening entanglement, Trevor Boryla responded for the Vikings, winning by 16-1 tech fall in the 133 class. Aurora then won back-to-back class victories before Augie responded with two of their own. The Vikings lost a match in the 174-class before winning by forfeit and decision to take a one-point lead into the final match. In the heavyweight class, Daniel Skold fell by an 8-2 decision, securing the victory for Aurora by a narrow 25-23 final.
In their second dual, Augie bested the Concordia Falcons by a 30-16 final score. Back-to-back victories highlighted the Vikings' early success in the dual, securing victories in the 133 and 141 classes. Jack Patting's 7-1 decision victory in the 165 class snapped a two-match losing streak. Augie was dominant to close the dual, dropping just one match in the 197 class.
The Vikings matched Wheaton in their final dual of the afternoon, falling in a 23-22 slugfest. Augie traded blows with the Thunder in the opening two matches, with Boryla securing his third win of the day in the 133 class. The following two contests fell in favor of Wheaton before Augustana secured back-to-back victories in the 157 and 165 classes. Entering their final two matches, the Vikings trailed by 13. Jacob Badger and Daniel Skold recorded fall victories to bring Augie within one point at the end of the dual.
Augustana had three wrestlers not drop a match on Saturday, Boryla in the 133 class, Patting at the 165 level, and Josh Woodrey in the 285 class.
The Vikings resume action against Wheaton on January 27-28 for the Pete Willson Invitational.
