The 2022 Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team posted numerous team and individual accolades throughout the 2022, beginning with team's best start since 2014.
Augie kicked off the year with a home thriller on September 1, erasing a 2-0 deficit to steal a victory over Knox. The team followed it up with a win the very next day in their first contest away from, sweeping the Trine Thunder for their first 2-0 start in eight years. Following a pair of losses, the Vikings were winners in eight of their next nine matches. A pair of road victories over Central and Cornell fueled the stretch of success for Augie, which also included a 3-1 road victory over Wheaton and a perfect 4-0 record at the home Viking Classic, dropping a total of just two sets over four matches.
Grace Vranicar (at Coe) and
Amelie Baehr-Ross (Viking Classic) both earned All-Tournament honors during the 8-1 span. Augie sat at 10-3 overall through 13 games, the best start since 2014 when they began 11-2.
Following the Viking Classic, Augustana continued to make noise in the CCIW. After a tough loss at home to North Central, Augie went on the road and defeated Millikin in four sets, the team's first win over the Big Blue since 2007. Eight days later, the Vikings knocked off No. 21 ranked Illinois Wesleyan at home to improve to 3-1 in conference.
Augustana endured a rough stretch over the course of their next eight matches, but bounced back in a big way after sweeping eventual CCIW-tournament champion North Park at home.ro help clinch a conference-tournament berth as the No. 5 seed, setting up a rematch with North Central in the opening round. This time, the Vikings came out on top, breaking away from a 1-1 tie to take the final two sets and move on to the semifinals. In the next round, Augie found themselves up on No. 1 seed Carthage 2-1, but dropped the final two to end their season with a 17-12 record, the most wins since posting 25 during the 2016 season.
Two Vikings were named All-CCIW following the conclusion of the regular season, led by
Syd Krueger's First Team selection. Krueger, a junior from Elmhurst, Ill., earned First Team honors after ranking second in the CCIW in hitting percentage and first in blocks at 0.94 per set through 27 regular-season matches. She's racked up 99 total blocks this season, 19 of which have been solo. She also sat fourth on the team in kills with 176 and had 30 service aces this year. On September 23, she posted a career-high eight blocks in the team's 3-1 victory at Millikin. Krueger also secured seven blocks in their 3-0 win over Trine earlier this year, which is good for most in the CCIW in 2022 for a three-set match.
Vranicar was named All-CCIW Second Team for a second straight season, finishing the regular season fifth in the conference with 4.63 digs per set. She snagged a season-best 29 digs in the team's win over North Central, good for eighth for most digs in four sets this season in the league. Earlier in year, she secured her 1,000th career dig in the team's match at Carthage. The junior finished with 528 digs in 2022, which has helped propel her into the top 15 all-time in total digs in Augustana program history.
Also entering the record book in 2022, Baehr-Ross currently sits at 13th all time in program history in assists. She earned her 1,000th career assist in the CCIW tournament win over North Central.
Leading the offensive efforts this season for the Vikings was
Emily Schipper, who notched a team-high 307 kills and 2.82 kill-per-game mark. Krueger was the top blocker, just under one per set at 0.91, while Vranicar and Baehr-Ross were the leaders in digs and assists. Baehr-Ross also posted the most service aces with 41, followed closely behind by
Jaden Julius at 40.
Caroline Hurst was named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District following the 2022 season.
Augustana closed out the 2022 calendar year with a trip to Costa Rica, picking up a couple of wins over local clubs during their trip.
