Women's volleyball sweeps Dominican in non-conference road match

Emily Schipper led the way with 14 kills

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team earned a road sweep of the Dominican Stars on Tuesday, winning by a score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) inside Igini Sports Forum.

The Vikings and Stars played to a 9-9 tie to begin set one, but Augie broke the deadlock with a 6-0 run. Augustana grew their lead to as many as nine at one point, with six of their final seven points coming by way of a kill to close out the 25-17 game one victory.

It appeared as if the Vikings were going to run away with set two, nearly doubling up the Stars with an early 13-7 advantage. Dominican charged back, taking the lead for the first and only time of the frame with seven consecutive scores. Augie responded with a 10-2 run of their own to pull away and claim a six-point victory to go up 2-0 in the match.

A tighter third set saw the home team leading for much of the first portion, but again the Vikings used another scoring burst to pull away for good. Trailing 10-8, Augustana rattled off seven in a row to go up by five. Dominican eventually trimmed the margin to as little as three, but a 5-0 counter from Augie all but sealed the set as they were able to fend off any comeback threats and take it by a score of 25-18.

Emily Schipper led the way with 14 kills for the Vikings, followed by Jaden Julius, who also cracked double figures with 11. Amelie Baehr-Ross posted 26 assists through the three games played, while Grace Vranicar grabbed a team-high 16 digs. Augie out-hit Domincan in kills, 45-30, with a hitting percentage of .312 compared to the Stars' .143 marks. Tonight's win was the fifth sweep of the season for the Vikings

With the win, the Vikings improve to 12-4 overall. The team will return home to face the No. 21 ranked Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Friday, September 30. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from inside the Carver Center.
