USAFA, Colo. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team dropped the final two contests of the Rare Air Invite on Sunday, falling to the host team Air Force Falcons by a score of 19-13 and the Biola Eagles by a final of 14-8.
Four different Vikings tallied two or more goals in the opening game against the Falcons, but the Vikings fell behind early in the game. Air Force doubled up Augie in both the first and second quarters, including six goals in the second on their way to a 10-5 halftime lead. The two teams played an even second half, with Air Force holding a slight advantage of 9-8 to close the game. The Vikings scored four of the final five goals, but ran out of time as their seven-game winning streak was snapped.
Tyler Leslie led Augustana with three goals, while
JP Sutton,
Oskar Bannister, and
Stevan Rasic each added two.Â
In Augie's final game of the weekend, the Vikings found themselves with another early deficit, trailing the Eagles of Biola by a score of 5-1 after eight minutes of action. Two goals in the second from
Joseph Addison and Sutton helped maintain their distance with the Eagles, but a score with six seconds remaining in the period game Biola a 3-2 advantage in the second quarter and an 8-3 halftime lead.
Another big quarter from the Eagles pushed their lead to 14-5 heading into the fourth. The Vikings held the Eagles scoreless in the final frame, but posted just three goals and were unable to catch up as they fell 14-8.
Sutton, Rasic, and
Colin McDowell each tallied two scores for Augustana.
With the defeats, Augie falls to 9-4 overall. The team will have a little under a month off before heading to Erie, Pa. for the DIII Eastern Championships beginning October 22.
