Men's water polo 2-0 after day one of W&J Invite

The Vikings defeated Mercyhurst and Washington & Jefferson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team finished day one of the W&J Invite with a perfect 2-0 record on Saturday, defeating Mercyhurst by a score of 22-7 and the host school Washington & Jefferson by a final of 13-5.

Game One (W 22-7 vs. Mercyhurst)

The Vikings jumped to a 5-2 advantage following eight minutes of action as Oskar Bannister and Joseph Addison accounted for all five scores for Augie. The Vikings doubled up the Lakers in the second quarter to push their lead to five at halftime. Four different Vikings scored a goal in the second quarter, with another coming from Addison. The junior finished the first half with four of the Vikings' nine scores.

Augustana added five more goals in the third, but broke away thanks to a sturdy defense that allowed just one score from the Lakers. It was another balanced showing from the Vikings in the period, with five different players tallying a score. Augie erupted for eight goals in the final quarter, their highest point total in a single frame this season, to run away with the 15-point victory.

Bannister and Addison each had five goals to fuel the Vikings' offensive efforts. Three others posted multiple scores in the contest and a total of 10 players tallied at least one. Declan Hutton stopped 22 Mercyhurst shots in net.

Game Two (W 13-5 vs. Washington & Jefferson)

In their final game of the day, the Vikings matched up with the host school Presidents. After a slow-moving first quarter that saw one goal apiece from each side, the Vikings pulled ahead in the second to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Five different Vikings pushed a shot into the back of the net in the second, with Stevan Rasic tallying two himself.

The Vikings scored the only two goals in the third to make it 9-3 in their favor. Augie went on to double up the Presidents 4-2 in the final frame to clinch the eight-point win.

Rasic and Addison each had three goals to lead the Vikings. Hutton had another monster save in net, finishing with 18 saves.

With the wins, Augustana improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. The Vikings will face No. 4 Johns Hopkins tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. CST before taking on Penn State Behrend in the weekend finale at 12:15 p.m. CST.
