Augie track & field sees multiple event winners at first outdoor meet

Six different Vikings won an event

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's track & field teams competed in their first outdoor event of the season over the weekend, seeing multiple event winners at the WashU Mini Meet hosted by Washington University in St. Louis.

Carson Eipers continued his success from the indoor season, earning first in the hammer throw with a toss of 48.33m. He ended nearly 1.5 meters ahead of the second place finisher. Also in throwing events, Jack Currie claimed first in the shot put with a heave of 13.74m, spotted just ahead of fellow teammate Luke Cowan in second, who posted a mark of 13.18m. Josh O'Brien (40.17m), Cowan (39,09m), and Currie (38.72m) ended the discus event with the second, fourth, and fifth place standing to round out the Vikings' success in throws. Augie also claimed three of the top five spots in the pole vault, led by Reid McNeill in first after clearing 3.90m. Derek Butts and Seth Rohr placed third and fourth, respectively. 

In running events, Seth Sottos clocked a time of 21.59 in the 200m dash to earn him first place. The time is good for fourth best in Augie history in the event. Sottos also placed third in the 100m with a mark of 10.76s, which places him eighth all-time in the Augustana record book. Michael Gille (1:57.68) and Joe Gibbons (1:59.31) placed fourth and sixth in the 800m run, while Carl Schoenfield (16:14.05) and Grant Ackard (16:26.04) finished fourth and sixth in the 5000m.

As a team, the Augie men placed third of six teams present.

On the women's side, Heather Michalski won the javelin with a mark of 33.62m to earn ten points for the Vikings. The freshman also placed second in the discus, while teammate Nora Ansburg secured fourth in the event. Katrina Krebasch, Brooke Ziegenhorn, and Madison Morrow all finished in the top five in the pole vault to close out field events. 

Anna Boardman highlighted the running events with a first-place standing in the with a time of 19:48.14 to make it six event winners between the two teams. Irais Tenorio grabbed top ten placements in the 1500m run to add to the Vikings' success.

As a team, the Augie women placed fourth of five teams present.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 2 at the Wartburg Outdoor Select in Waverly, Iowa.
