LAKE GENEVA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team will remain on the road on Sunday, March 12 to take on the No. 30 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks in a non-conference battle.
Augie is looking to build momentum after picking up their first win of the season last weekend in a 5-4 road win over Illinois Tech. The Vikings found themselves in an early deficit after the Scarlet Hawks took two of three doubles matches to take a one-point lead heading into singles play.
Arthur Hermange and
Leonardo Panosso salvaged an important point at No. 1 doubles, defeating their opponent by a score of 8-3.
Hermange knotted up the match with the first win in singles at the No. 1 spot, taking it by a score of 6-2, 6-1. With three wins needed from either team to clinch the match, the Vikings earned hard-fought victories at the No. 2, 3, and 6 positions to secure four of six singles matches and grab the come-from-behind win.
Kyle Boudreau's 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 6 proved to be the match clincher, while Panosso and
Deepak Vayara tallied the other two victories for Augie.
Whitewater enters weekend play with a 10-1 overall record, but fell in their most recent outing last Saturday to Gustavus Adolphus by a score of 7-2. The Warhawks are ranked No. 30 in the first edition of the ITA top 40 rankings, which came out on March 10. The Vikings and Warhawks have three common opponents so far this season in Luther, Grinnell, and Illinois Tech. Whitewater is 3-0 vs. that group, while Augie is 1-2.
Augustana has never beaten UW-Whitewater, sitting at 0-18 all-time. The two teams met last season in Rock Island, resulting in a 9-0 victory for the Warhawks.
Start time is scheduled for noon from Lake Geneva, Wis.
