NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's bowling team competed in the first CCIW tournament of the season over the weekend, finishing in fourth place in the conference after posting a 5-3 record at Bowlero Bowl in Naperville.
The Vikings started off the tournament with a dominating 774-518 victory over Illinois Wesleyan, but were then defeated by Marian, who finished tied for first. Augie nearly pulled off a victory in the third contest of the day, falling to Aurora, who is the other team in first, by a score of 876-821. The Vikings closed out day one with a 957-811 win over Elmhurst to finish 2-2 and in fifth place overall heading into Sunday. Their score of 957 against Elmhurst is believed to be a school record for a five Baker game total.
On day two, Augie earned a narrow victory in their opening match to North Central, winning by a margin of just 15 points. The Vikings found themselves on the flip side of a close contest in match two, defeated by Carroll by just 16 at a score of 918-902. Augustana rounded out their Sunday slate with two wins against Lakeland and Carthage to post a record of 3-1 on the day and 5-3 overall. Augie finished in a tie for fourth with Carthage, but currently owns the tiebreaker thanks to their head-to-head triumph in the final match of the tournament.Â
As of now, Augustana would be included as one of four teams to compete in the CCIW Championships in late March. The standings from this weekend will be combined with results from the second CCIW tournament in a few weeks. The top four teams will advance to the final round.
"With Baker being designed for team play, it truly was a full team effort," said head coach
Marty Resner. "The great scores we had this weekend couldn't be accomplished without all members contributing. We are in the hunt to make the final final and advance to the championship round in late March."
