MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Augustana men's wrestling (9-7, 4-3) earned their ninth dual victory of the season this evening. The Vikings narrowly eclipsed the Cornell Rams in a 22-21 road win.
Augustana started the night's efforts with two lightweight wins.
Ellex Williams pinned Cornell's Nathan Bednarczyk at 125 and
Trevor Boryla won a 7-5 decision over Evan Husko to give Augie a quick 9-0 lead.
Cornell picked up their first win of the dual at 141 when Keegan Schultschnick won a 4-2 decision over Augustana's
Kameron Hanel.
Alex Cruz got the Vikings back on track with a win by fall over Klayton Keller. The Vikings held a 15-3 advantage after four matches.
Cornell gathered some momentum in the middle weights, winning four consecutive matches. Killian Perrigan pinned
Chase Clark at 157, Spencer Roth recorded a technical fall over Augie's
Vinny Querciagrossa at 165, Jacob Scherzer defeated
Jack Patting by major decision at 174, and Colin Honderd earned the Rams' final win over
Jacob Badger at 184. Heading into the two heaviest matches of the dual, Cornell led 21-15.
At 197 pounds,
Clay DeBaillie began Augustana's final surge. The freshman defeated Cornell's Treyten Steffen by sudden victory to narrow the Rams' lead to 21-18. Finally, at 285,
Josh Woodrey picked up the dual-tying victory over Zachary Finn by decision.
With a 21-21 stalemate, the scoring was eventually decided by tiebreakers. Augustana earned one team point and the victory by the second criteria, beating Cornell 2-1 in falls.
Wednesday's dual was the last regular season event for the Augustana men. The Vikings will be back in action for postseason wrestling at the NCAA Lower Midwest Regional tournament Feb. 26 and 27.
