Indoor track & field teams shine at Darren Young Invitational

The Vikings had five event winners and 43 lifetime bests throughout both teams

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings indoor track & field teams competed at the Darren Young Invitational on Saturday hosted by Grinnell College, enjoying one of their most complete meets of the season to date as both teams saw event winners and numerous personal records.

On the men's side, Carson Eipers continues to bring home first-place finishes as he won the weight throw with a toss of 17.97m. Dakota Straight was the winner in the pole vault event after clearing 4.30m. The Vikings took four of the top five spots in the event, with Reid McNeil coming in second after clearing the 4.30m height as well. John Cathcart earned a top five finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.21m, while Luke Cowan secured sixth in the shot put with a heave of 13.48m.

In the running events, Seth Sottos continued his dominance on the track with a win in the 60m dash at a time of 6.94. That mark now puts him all alone in the second all-time in the Augustana record book in the 60m event. Sottos also placed third in the 200m dash, coming in right behind teammate Connor McBride who finished with a time of 22.71 in second. McBride also placed third in the 60m dash. In the 400m, Ian Rothery earned second following a time of 50.61, just a half a second out of first. Braeden Clements secured fifth in the event as well. The Vikings also saw a pair of top five finishes in the 5000m run as Evan Webber grabbed third, followed by Karsten Zielinski in fifth. Steven Haley took fifth in the 3000m to round out the successful outing on the track.

As a team, the Viking men placed second overall out of 11 teams with a total of 117 points.

Katrina Krebasch was a two-time winner during the meet to lead the Augie women, taking home first in both the high jump and pole vault. Her 3.50m clearance in the pole vault was the top mark in the event and was followed by teammate Brooke Ziegenhorn in second at 3.35m. In the triple jump, Sammi Anselme grabbed a fourth-place finish with a mark of 9.79m, while Heather Michalski earned fourth in the shot put with a toss of 11.97m. Michalski also placed ninth in the weight throw.

On the track, Emma Odle came in second in the 3000m run, crossing the finish line with a time of 11:11.20. Jade Johnson secured a top-five placement in the 60m dash, coming in with a time of 8.32. Irais Tenorio and Anna Boardman also collected fourth-place standing in their respective races, with Tenorio posting a time of 5:31.26 in the one-mile run and Boardman with a 19:24.11 effort in the 5000m run.

Overall, the Viking women placed fourth out of 11 teams with a score of 72 points.

"This was a fantastic meet all around," commented head coach Jake Shaver. "We had a total of 43 lifetime bests overall."

Augustana will be back in action on Friday, February 18 at the Spartan Invitational in Dubuque. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
