LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team will face for an MPSF East tournament championship on Sunday after defeating the Penn State Behrend Lions on Saturday by a final of 17-6.
The Lions struck first in the game, but were met with a score from
Joseph Addison to round out all of the offense in the first quarter. Augie's offense came alive in the second period, notching seven of the nine goals scored to take an 8-3 lead into halftime.
Colin McDowell saw all four of his goals in the game come in the opening 16 minutes of action.
Augustana continued to build upon their lead, posting a slight 3-2 margin in the third quarter to extend the differential to six heading into the fourth. Like the second, the Vikings put up a big number in the final frame, securing six goals to Behrend's one. Addison,
Oskar Bannister, and
Tyler Leslie each grabbed two goals apiece in the second half.
McDowell and Bannister led the way with four goals, followed by three from Addison. Leslie and
Stevan Rasic each added two.
Henry Sothern snagged eight saves in net, while Bannister swiped a team-best four steals.
With the win, Augustana improves to 13-6 on the year. The team will close out their 2022 campaign against the Austin 'Roos on Sunday in the MPSF Eastern Championship. The Vikings are 2-0 against the 'Roos this season. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CST.
