Men 2nd, women 5th at Luther Invite

DECORAH, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams wrapped up their two-day stay at the Luther Invite on Saturday, with the men finishing in second and the women in fifth.

"I am extremely proud of our team as we were the one team there that did not rest and fully suit up in tech suits," said head coach Dan Lloyd. "We swam a lot of off-events and did not swim our full lineup, so it was great to see us compete so well. Our team stepped and really showed our toughness and our focus is always on the end of the season."

The men's team placed second out of five teams present. The Vikings saw multiple finalists that made up an active weekend for Augie, including four top-three finishes in relays.

Relays 

  • The men's 200 freestyle relay made up of Terrin Boehmer, Kacper Cebula, Nick Phillips, Jack Blumenfeld earned bronze with a time of 1:27.94. The same team swam the 400 Medley relay, taking third.

  • The men's 200 medley relay made up of Phillips (back), Cebula (breast), Cesar Castillo (fly), and Blumenfeld earned silver (1:36.16).

  • The 400 freestyle relay team of Cebula, Blumenfeld, Phillips, and Albert Bulvary finished second (3:15.42).

Day 1 - Individual finishes

  • In the 200 IM A final, Cebula earned silver with a 1:56.36. In the B final, Michael Garland took 11th (2:06.03). Holden Siena finished 14th (2:08.58).
  • In the 500 free, Gavin McCorry finished 12th with a time of 5:15.66. Not far behind him were teammates Isaiah Valentine (5:22.35) and Christian Mammoser (5:25.07) who finished 14th and 15th, respectively.  
  • In the 100 back A final, Phillips (53.86) and Cesar Castillo (54.18) took sixth and seventh. In the B final, Boehmer (56.99) and Dante Rinaldi (57.41) finished 13th and 14th. 
  • In the 200 breast, Garland finished fourth with a 2:17,34, Tommy Anderson took eighth (2:26.71). In the B final, Jack Brandt finished 12th with a 2:28.14.
  • In the 100 free, Blumenfeld took eighth (49.11). Cebula won the B final, clocking in at 48:14.
  • In the 200 fly, Valentine won the B final, finishing at 2:09 01. 
  • In the 100 IM A final, Augie earned places 4th-7th. Castillo (55.03), Phillips (55.88), Nathan Mesina (56.42), and Garland (56.42) rounded out the top seven in the event.

Day 2 - Individual finishes

  • In the 400 IM, Siena took seventh (4:35.3).
  • In the 200 freestyle, Blumenfeld took 10th with a 1:51.56, while Mesina earned 12th with a time of 1:51.97.
  • In the 100 fly, Cebula earned silver clocking in at 51.64.
  • In the 100 breast, Garland took eighth (1:03.7). In the B final, Mesina finished 10th (1:03.57), Anderson 13th (1:05.59), and Buvary in 14th (1:05.59).
  • In the 200 back, McCory took 5th (1:59.76). In the B final, Castillo earned 11th (2:03.46). 
  • In the 50 free, Phillips earned bronze (21.48), with Blumenfeld coming in sixth (21.98). In the B final, Cebula finished 9th (21.85) and Brandt took 11th (22.09).

On the men's side, Augustana ended the meet in second with 522 points.

For the women, the Vikings saw four top-five placements in relays. The relay team of Hailey Glasnovich, Zoe Heiar, Brooke Walker, and Izzy Sansom swam all four relays together. 

  • In the 200 freestyle relay, the team took fifth with a time of 1:43.7. 

  • In the 400 medley, they finished fourth, posting a time of 4:14.46. 

  • In the 200 medley relay, the relay team clocked in at 1:53.48, taking fourth,

  • In the 400 free relay, the team finished strong earning bronze with a time of 3:47.32.

Day 1 - Individual finishes

Friday was highlighted by Emily Martin, who finished second in the 100 IM and set a school record with a time of 1:02.57. She broke the previous record 1:03.40 set by Lauren Raike in 2020.

  • The first individual event of the meet was the 200 IM. In the B final, Genevieve Ryan took 12th with a time of 2:24.45. 
  • In the 500 freestyle A final, Walker finished fourth with a time of 5:24.94, followed by Bella Casanovas in eighth at 5:33.31. In the B final, Emily Martin (5:37.67) took 12th and finished .03 faster than teammate Bryanna Matkovich (5:37.7), who took 13th. 
  • In the 100 Backstroke, Glasnovich finished 7th with a time of 1:03.96. In the B final, Megan Frost took 14th with a time of 1:06.97.
  • In the 200 Breast, Kaitlyn Yee took 7th swimming a 2:41.68.
  • In the 100 freestyle, Sansom earned bronze at 54.74. In the B final, Glasnovich took 13th (58.49).
  • In the 200 butterfly, the team finished off the first day strong as Casanovas finished fifth with a mark of 2:21.74. In the B final, Ryan (2:29.06) and Matkovich (2:36.22) took 14th and 15th, respectively.

Day 2 - Individual finishes

  • In the 400 IM, Casanovas finished fifth with a time of 4:54.24. In the B final, Martin took 12th, clocking in at 5:02.33.  
  • In the 200 freestyle, Walker finished 4th with a time of 2:01.25. Not far behind her were teammates Olivia White and Sansom in sixth and eighth.
  • In 100 fly, Heiar earned bronze (1:01.92) and Sansom took 8th (1:04.79). Casanovas won the B final with a time of 1:03.54, followed by Ryan (1:05.09) who took 14th.
  • In the 100 breaststroke, Walker finished fourth with a time of 1:11.23.
  • In the 50 free, Sansom earned silver (25.05) and Heiar finished seventh (25.89).


The Vikings are back in action on December 3-4 at the Wheaton Invitational.
