Women's volleyball splits home triangular

Augie defeated Loras before falling to Grinnell

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team split a home triangular on Saturday, defeating the Loras Duhawks by a final of 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) before falling to the Grinnell Pioneers by a score of 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19).

Match One (W 3-0 vs. Loras)

Augustana quickly doubled up Loras 10-5 in the opening set, growing their lead to as many as seven before tallying four of the final five points of the game to win by eight. The Vikings jumped out another quick lead in set two at 7-2, but eventually lost their advantage as the Duhawks used a 5-0 spurt to claim a 10-9 lead at the time. Loras' grew their margin up to three on three different occasions, with the latest coming at a score of 18-15. From there, the Vikings scored eight points in a row to flip the se tin their favor, holding onto the four-point win to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

In set three, it was Loras who found themselves up big early, doubling their margin at 14-7. The Duhawks maintained their lead for a majority of the frame, holding a four-point margin later on at 20-16. Two different 3-0 runs from the Vikings allowed them to take the lead at 22-21, eventually breaking a 23-23 deadlock with two consecutive points to close out the match and set.

Emily Schipper posted a match-high 17 kills with a .275 hitting percentage. Caroline Hurst added eight, with a percentage of .348. Grace Vranicar secured 20 digs in just the three sets played.

Match Two (L 3-1 vs. Grinnell)

Augustana wrapped up a busy weekend inside the Carver Center with a 3-1 defeat to the Pioneers in their final contest. Grinnell took the opening set 25-17, but the Vikings bounced back with a 25-21 victory to even the match.

The Vikings saw leads of at least five in each of the third and fourth sets, but were met with mid-set scoring runs from the Pioneers that pushed them ahead. Augustana was unable to catch up to late deficits as the Pioneers held on for consecutive set wins to seal the match.

Augie committed 34 errors in the contest compared to 20 from Grinnell. Vranicar led the defensive efforts with 27 digs, while Jaden Julius and Schipper each had 10 kills.

With the split. Augustana's record now sits at 14-5 overall. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, October 5 when they take on the Carthage Firebirds on the road. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Kenosha, Wis.
