DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams will compete in the first of two dual meets in as many days beginning on Friday, January 28 when they visit the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees.
It will be the first dual meet since November 6 for both the Viking men and women as each team sits at 2-0 this year with wins against Monmouth and Illinois Wesleyan. Augie is coming off of their first meet of 2022 last weekend at the Grinnell Invitational where they saw a second-place finish from the women and fourth from the men, despite bringing a limited group to compete.Â
The Viking women earned second place with a total of 905 points, coming behind only Grinnell in the two-day event. Augustana saw first place finishes in the 200 free style, 400 freestyle relay and the 100 IM.Â
Emily Martin, who finished with a time of 1:03.88, just 0.4 off of the school record earned the win in the 100 IM. The team saw a podium sweep in the event as
Bella Valenti earned second and
Lauren Raike came in third. The Augie men ended the meet in fourth out of seven teams with a total of 510 points. The Viking men saw one event winner in
Albert Buvary, who was victorious in the 100 freestyle.
Jack Brandt also took home first in the 200 IM B final with a time of 2:05.90.
For St. Ambrose, their men's team sits at 2-1 on the year with wins over Coe and Morningside. They have placed first in both a quad and tri meet this season. Augie and St. Ambrose are 4-4-1 all-time in dual meets versus each other on the men's side, with the most recent coming in 2019 that resulted in a 143-61 win for the Fighting Bees.
On the women's side, St. Ambrose enters Friday 2-2 on the season, also with wins over Coe and Morningside. They have placed first in one tri meet back in December. The Augie women have never lost a dual meet to the Bees, posting a 3-0 record all-time in their history. All three encounters have been in Davenport, with the most recent during the 2019-20 season resulting in a 127-109 victory for the Vikings.
