Viking women earn second conference win in upset victory at Carroll

Offense lights up early and cruises through second half en route to road win

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Augustana women's basketball team (8-10, 2-7) earned an upset victory on the road this evening with a 67-58 triumph at Carroll.

The Pioneers (12-4, 4-4) entered the day riding a seven-game winning streak with a dozen wins overall. The Vikings spoiled Carroll's hot streak with impressive performances from several key contributors.

Augustana flipped the script from recent games and jumped out to a hot start. After falling down 7-1 in the early stages, back-to-back three-pointers from Macy Beinborn and Lauren Hall ignited the Viking offense. Augie rolled through the rest of the period and capped a 20-0 run on an Emily Brenneisen triple to end the stanza.

The Pioneers offense finally started clicking in the second period as Augie's regressed. The Vikings scored just 11 points while Carroll poured in 26 to capture a 32-21 halftime lead.

The Vikings returned to their earlier form in the second half and held the Pioneers to a mere nine points in the third quarter and outscored the hosts again in the final period to secure the nine-point victory.

Gabriela Loiz led the way for Augustana with 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Lauren Hall was nearly as productive scoring and more dominant on the glass with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Brenneisen recorded seven assists to lead either team in that category.

Natalie Palzkill led Carroll with 18 points while Kate Christian added 12 and Elizabeth Behrndt scored 10. Behrndt collected eight rebounds to lead the Pioneers on the boards.

Augustana will be back at home for their next two matchups when they host North Central on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Augie will then host Carroll on Saturday, Jan. 29 to conclude the season series with the second contests in three games.
