ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augie women's volleyball is set for a big weekend of non-conference action at the Carver Center. The Viking Classic invitational will run from this evening, Friday, Sept. 17, to tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Sept. 18. The Vikings will host games against UW-Platteville, Nebraska Wesleyan, Knox, and Coe. Lake Forest will also be in attendance.
Augustana brings a record of 4-5 into the Viking Classic. Their offensive attack is led by
Emily Schipper with 71 kills, followed closely by Brooke Fieldman with 67. Fieldman also leads the Vikings' serving efforts with 18 aces.
Olivia Doak has also been a key component to Augie's offense with a total of 173 assists.
Amelie Baehr-Ross is second in that category with 75. Defensively, Doak and Fieldman are two of three players with more than 50 digs with 51 and 73, respectively.
Grace Vranicar leads that stat for Augie with 135. Finally, at the net, two women have double-digit blocks including
Ja'Nya Davis with 21 and
Lexis Miller with 10.
UW-Platteville enters the weekend with a 4-6 record and a two-game losing streak. The Pioneers boast two players with 100+ kills including Olivia Kudronowicz with 110 and Emma Carlson with 105. Three of Platteville's 10 games have come against other CCIW opponents. In those games against Millikin, Elmhurst, and Carthage, the Pioneers are 2-1 including a win at Carthage.
Augustana and UWP have faced off on five other occasions with the Vikings leading the series 4-1. In their last match-up the Pioneers defeated Augie in a 3-2 nail biter at the Carver Center.
Nebraska Wesleyan enters the Viking Classic with a 6-1 record. Addie Thomas leads the attack with 85 total kills, while Erica Hopping and Cassidy Plooster have made 107 and 90 assists, respectively. Kennady Klein and Mackenzie Scurto have recorded a combined 198 digs.
NWU has taken on the Vikings on three previous instances with Augie leading the all-time series 2-1. Most recently, the Prairie Wolves swept Augie 3-0 in the 2019 season.
Knox has posted a 3-4 record thus far in the 2021 season. The Prairie Fire's offense has been paced by Catessa Duran's 45 kills, plus Katie Anderson's 122 assists and 11 service aces. Emme Patton has received the most hits with 91 digs, followed by Anderson's 63. Duran also leads the front line defense with 10 blocks.
Augustana has beaten Knox in all three previous matches. From 2013-2015, the Vikings swept Knox in three straight contests.
Finally, Coe College brings a 5-4 overall mark to Rock Island. The Kohawk's efforts have been led by Kate Tidman with 131 kills. Elli Teeple has been stellar as a passer with 331 set assists. On defense for Coe, Madi Parson has recorded 108 digs while three players have blocked double-digit attacks including Gracie Urbatsch with 19, Tidman with 11, and Grace Lueken with 10.
Coe and Augie have squared off eight other times with their most recent match-up coming in 2019. The Vikings swept the most recent match but Coe leads the series 5-3.
