Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. - The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team scored eight goals in the third quarter and held on to a 15-11 win over the host school Penn State-Behrend Lions on Saturday at the PSB Invitational, tallying a victory in their first-ever varsity game in school history.
Game One (W 15-11 vs. Penn State-Behrend)
The Lions and Vikings played to a deadlock after one quarter of play, each scoring three goals apiece.
Joseph Addison scored one of his two first-half goals in the first quarter to help keep even with the home team. The Augustana defense picked up in the second, shutting out the Lions while adding another three-spot on the scoreboard. Augie led Behrend 6-3 at the halftime break. Five different players notched a goal in the first two quarters for Augustana.
A strong third quarter helped propel the Vikings out to a nine-point advantage. Eight goals scored by the Vikings pushed their lead to 14-5 heading into the final frame.
James Sutton punched in three scores in the third quarter alone. Addison also added his third goal in as many periods. The Lions put together a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring six goals and holding the Vikings to just one, but it was too little too late as the cushion Augie built in the third was enough to fend off the PSB comeback effort.
Game Two (L 16-15 vs. Washington & Jefferson)
It was four evenly-played quarters in the second match of the day, beginning the opening quarter against the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson with a slight 4-3 advantage. Two goals in the first from
Jacob Fisher helped jumpstart the Vikings. The Presidents knotted things up with a 4-3 advantage in their favor in the second half, with both teams entering halftime with eight goals.
Zander O'Dwyer joined Fisher with two goals for Augie at the break.
After another closely-fought quarter, the two teams entered the final frame tied at 12-12. A back-and-forth affair ensured, but the Presidents squeaked out a 4-3 advantage in the final period to squeak out the one-point victory. Addison helped keep the Vikings in it with two goals in the third and one in the fourth. O'Dwyer also added another goal in the second half, finishing the contest with three scored.
With the results from day one, Augustana finishes their first day of competition with a 1-1 record. The team will close out their stay at the PSB Invitational on Sunday, September 12th when they take on the Austin Roos. Start time is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. CST.
