ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Already the winningest women's tennis coach in Augustana history,
Jon Miedema added the same distinction on the men's side Tuesday when his Vikings defeated Elmhurst 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the CCIW Tournament. Augustana—10-6 on the year—advances to Friday's semifinals in Elmhurst, Illinois to play the winner of Tuesday's Carthage-Illinois Wesleyan quarterfinal.
The Vikings dropped just six games in sweeping the doubles competition.
At number one, seniors
Alvaro Leal (Maristas Valencia, Valencia, Spain) and Caio de Rezende
(Colegio Itoca, Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored an 8-0 win over Justin Penados and Ben Cavka. Juniors
Justin Cassens (Emerald Ridge HS, Puyallup, Wash.) and
Leonardo Panosso (La Sale Caxias, Caxias do Sul, Brazil) defeated Tavious Imperial and Shawn Sabaricos 8-3 at number three and senior
Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) and junior
Kyle Boudreau (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) downed Brandon Fulmer and Florin Stan by the same score at second doubles.
De Rezende, who this week was named the CCIW's Player of the Year, bested Penados 6-2, 6-0 at first singles and senior
Ryan Sullivan (The Gow School, Winnetka, Ill.) got the clincher 6-0, 6-1 over Imperial at number six.
Alex, Panosso, freshman
Eliot St. Paul (Ecole Diagonal, Paris, France) and Cassens—playing second through fifth singles, respectively—had all won their first sets and led in the second when play was halted.
The victory was the 158th in Miedema's 10 seasons, moving him past Harry S.B. Johnson as the winningest men's coach in Augustana history. Johnson compiled 157 victories from 1945-66.
