Kalli Majewski (left) and Morgan Bullen won a hard-fought 8-7 decision at number two doubles.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – It was an improbable score sheet that head coach
Jon Miedema was looking at after his Augustana women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to North Central on Saturday, April 17 at the Lower Campus Courts. His Vikings won all three doubles matches by identical 8-7 scores and then dropped all six singles matches. With the loss, Augustana falls to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while North Central goes to 9-4 and 6-0.
Things looked pretty good after doubles when the Vikings swept for a 3-0 lead. Senior Anne Timm
(Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and sophomore
Lily Schoeck (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) beat Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay 8-7 at number one. The Augustana number two team of seniors
Kalli Majewski (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) and
Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) defeated Sydney Sawyer and Mikayla Edquiban 8-7. At third doubles it was freshman
Caitlyn Hanulikova (Ames HS, Ames, Iowa) and sophomore
Lauren Oda (Elk Grove HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) over Kaeli Smashey and Nina Patience 8-7.
The tables turned in singles, however as Smashey beat Timm 6-3; 6-2 at number one and Hougland defeated Schoeck 6-2; 6-0 at number two. Kanthaphixay beat sophomore
Michaela Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kansas) 7-5; 7-5 at number three.
Hanulikova went three sets at number four with Edquiban before falling 2-6; 6-1; 1-6 and Oda also went three sets at number five. She fell to Sawyer 7-6; 4-6; 3-6. Majewski lost 1-6; 3-6 to Patience at number six.
Augustana will be in action again on Sunday, April 18 when the Vikings host Carthage at 12:00 noon and Carroll at 3:00 p.m. at the Lower Campus Courts.
