Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) provided the clinching point with a dramatic, three-set victory at number two singles as Augustana beat Hope 5-4 in Holland, Michigan on Saturday, April 9. Alex, who also won at number one doubles, defeated Cam Coates 7-5; 6-7; 7-6 to break a 4-4 tie and give head coach
Jon Miedema's team its fifth win of the season against three defeats.
The Vikings actually won three of the top four singles matches after taking two of three in doubles.
Senior
Caio deRezende (Colegio Itoca, Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Jacob Burkett at number one by a score of 6-3; 2-6; 6-2. The other singles win for Augustana came at number four where freshman
Eliot St. Paul (Ecole Diagnonal; Paris, France) took a three-setter from Tyler Koran 0-6; 6-3; 6-2.
Junior
Leonardo Panosso (La Sale Caxias; Caxias Do Sul, Brazil) fell 5-7; 6-7 to Tyler Stafford at number three and junior
Justin Cassens (Emerald Ridge HS, Puyallup, Wash.) lost 3-6; 1-6 to Paul Washington at number five. Junior
Kyle Boudreau (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) went three sets at number six before falling 4-6; 6-4; 4-6 to Matt Henkel.
Alex and Boudreau combined at number one doubles to beat Burkett and Henkel 8-4 and Panosso and Cassens defeated Coats and Koran 8-6 at number three. The Vikings number two team of deRezende and St. Paul fell to Stafford and Washington 8-4.
Augustana will be in action on Sunday, April 11 at home against Elmhurst in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action at the Lower Campus Courts, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
